About Martin

Professor Martin Wullschleger arrived in Australia in 2005, bringing his wife and four boys all the way from the city of Chur in the Swiss Alps.

Martin studied medicine in Zurich, Switzerland, to gain his qualification as a medical doctor. He went on to become a qualified general and trauma surgeon, where he worked as a trauma consultant at the Swiss Alpine Trauma Centre, Cantonal Hospital, Chur.

Upon moving to Australia, Martin took up a position as a trauma fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where he assisted Professor Michael Schuetz establish the trauma service for the Hospital. In 2010, he accepted a trauma fellow position at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, working alongside Professor Cliff Pollard and later with Professor Daryl Wall. Martin is currently the Director of Trauma Services at Gold Coast University Hospital.

Martin has long been recognised by both colleagues and patients for his caring and passionate approach to patient care. Like many doctors, he has been faced with numerous life and death decisions, but none more so than the day he met Darryl O'Callaghan. On that fateful day in July 2010, Darryl was not expected to survive his injuries sustained in a horrific motorcycle accident. Martin did not know Darryl before that day, but chose to put his own career on the line to give Darryl one last shot at life. Martin's courage against overwhelming odds, is documented in the video Miracle Ride and is testimony to Martin’s passion for his profession and his genuine love of people.  He became a doctor to make a difference and it is this common goal of wanting to make a difference that has melded a great friendship between Darryl and Martin.  The creation of Red Blanket Miracle is the next step in their journey towards helping those who are the victims of trauma, reclaim their lives.

Martin holds several qualifications in the field of medicine including a MBBS, MD, PhD, FRACS, FMH Surgery and ESBQ Trauma. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), and a member of the RACS Queensland Trauma Committee.
